Once upon a Monday…

Once upon a Monday,

I hit the ground running.

No more weekend fun days,

Pencil lead is hummmmmmm

Cool Coffee Shop

Stopping in Greyfriar’s Coffee & Tea Co. was part of this weekend’s trip to Chattanooga. Coffee beans under glass on tables – clever. I enjoyed a suuuper smooth breve. I highly recommend it.

Winter Break!

Yes, it is only one day, but guess what? NOTHING is due today! There is so much joy wrapped up in those four words. I do have a part-time job that requires my attention later today, but that’s like taking a break compared to homework/study time. So it has been a wonderful, stay in my pajamas, kind of morning.

26 years!  WOW!  I swear we were sitting on a hill outside our high school holding hands only yesterday.  Now we have grown (out of the house) children.  Time is a crazy concept.  We may want to strangle each other occasionally but we both know how fortunate we are to have each other.  He is a huge part of me being able to go back to school, very supportive of this life change for not just me, but both of us.

When re-entering college in my forties, I had to start at a different level than if I had finished my degree in my twenties.  Math was my best subject in high school, but high school was over 20 years ago.  So I started with the easiest Math offered and worked my way up.  The same would be true for anyone else and in any field of choice.  Since I love Math, those early classes were fun!  I still enjoy Math very much.  It just requires a lot more work now, but I can do it.

I also wondered if I would retain the same level of intelligence or have the same learning ability that I had in high school.  The good news, if you are considering going back to school, is that yes indeed, we have the same level of intelligence regardless of age.  In fact, I do much better in college now than when I was younger.  I know who I am and what I want.  I understand debt and would never have taken on the debt necessary to finish college without a determination to do my best.  I didn’t have that knowledge and confidence in self straight out of high school.

There are scholarships, grants and student loans available.  I am not a wealthy person.  The debt is scary, but look at it this way.  With a degree you can earn enough money to pay a loan payment and still have money leftover after paying bills.  That is money you would not have had without the degree and higher paying job.  It’s worth it.

It won’t be too late for you to go back until you are pushing up daisies.  If I can do it, you can, too.

Saying that three times fast is much easier than finding a place to park on campus.  If you arrive 15 minutes early, you’re late.  You must arrive well in advance in order to drive around campus until someone vacates a parking spot at the exact moment you are approaching it.  Since there is a reason starving college students are starving, we have to come up with a way to avoid that.

One option is to get to campus before 8 am.  This works really well if you have an early class or no life outside of college.  If you do have a life or I don’t know, a job(!), we’ll need a plan B.  I refer to this as the “arrive to class smelling like a bison” plan.  This is where you park a mile from class, strap two tons of books to your back and power walk to class.  It’s great.  :/
